So, more about this date.
Ok, so I reconnected with a guy I knew like a hundred years ago. We’ll call him Phil. Phil used to date my friend … uh …. Janet in high school. Janet isn’t around here anymore, she and I haven’t spoken in years, so I figured I was in the clear to go on ONE date with her ex. Here’s the tricky part, she (Janet) has a child with Phil. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh …. dun, dun, duuuuuuun! I know, I know, it’s on the borderline of a sticky situation.
Anyway, So he and I re-met a few years ago, were strictly just friendly. No flirting or anything. A few months ago, he and I exchanged phone numbers and agreed to get in touch sometime when I was in his area, or he was in mine. No big deal, friends do that stuff all the time…I didn’t think anything of it to be honest.
Well, Wednesday night, I’m sitting on the front porch reading a book and I get a text from Phil saying he’ll be in town this weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to do something / get together and “catch up”. I coincidentally had no plans, so I said, sure why not. I still at this point wasn’t thinking anything more than maybe having a drink with a friend. But then, he suggested going to the drive-in with him and his daughter. Hmmmm… Interesting. Um, so I thought that sounded ok, I mean, I’d met and known his daughter since she was born, why not….and he then texted me back and said “It’s a “date” then!” Date huh? But was it a date? People use the term so loosely, I wasn’t clear.
So we text back and forth a couple more times texting….and then, around 10:20 p.m. he calls me instead of texting back. Me, still reading nothing more into his sudden interest, was friendly and chatty with him, as I would be with anyone. We laughed, the conversation was fun….and then flirty. He started it though, for the record. He told me that I had a “sexy voice”…and I raised my eyebrow to myself…thinking… well I think we just established Saturday Night’s Date status. He told me that sometimes my “sexy voice” distracts him to the point that he can’t listen to what I’m saying….*laughs*
Is this just a guys way of saying… “Hmmm? What? I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening!”?
Anyway, we ended up talking the night away until 2:00 a.m. when I finally told him I had to go to bed! He sounded bummed that I was ending the conversation, however, I was tired and had to get some sleep before having to rise at six thirty to go back to work!
So the date was set, and I went to bed smiling at the idea of a new romance in my future…completely out of the blue. I love when that happens….
Saturday came and I was excited to see Phil. I mean, other than pictures, I hadn’t seen him in like 12+ years. I wondered, would he still be handsome? Would he think I’d changed too much?
But when he arrived on my porch and knocked on my front door Saturday night, I said to myself…Damn Heather…he’s cute! And he really was. Nicely dressed, tall, hair recently cut…yep, the date was starting out pretty good. He commented on my hair being different, and I commented on his being shorter…we stared at each other as we made our way to his truck and he even opened the door for me. What a gentleman.
Well, sort of.
My very cute gentleman however had one thing ungentlemanly about him….he smoked more than any human being I’d ever seen before in my life. One after another after another, and maybe I was just overly sensitive to the situation because I am so new on the non-smoking front, but seriously…he was killing me. I had told him prior to our date that I had quit that week and how hard the struggle for me was, so honestly, I guess I half expected him to not smoke like that around me. Maybe that was too much to expect…courtesy when it comes to smoking.
I dated a guy recently whom HATED my smoking! Hated it so much, that before I’d see him, I’d shower, wash my hair, brush my teeth, gargle, whiten my teeth, and then chew gum before I’d see him….and I’d NEVER smoke around him. No way! I know what it’s like to kiss a smoker when you aren’t one, and I wanted to be totally kissable for him. Not Phil though. Nope, before we even left town, he picked up two packs of Marlboros to get him through the movies we were going to see.
Anyway, so I got to meet his parents when we went to pick up his daughter, they seemed happy to meet me, a little awkwardly really, but I smiled and soon enough, we were on our way to the Van Del Drive-in with his little red-haired girl. Whom I got to tell you, is sweet as they come.
Um, the conversation between Phil and I was a bit sparse at first…I guess 12 years of absence doesn’t leave you a lot in common, and even less to talk about in front of a 12 year old daughter.
Once the movies started, things got better…I sat in the middle, him on my right, Haley on my left. We were all snuggled in and Phil pulled me near him and it was nice. Well it was nice when he wasn’t lighting up nearly catching my hair on fire and blowing smoke in my general direction anyway.
The first movie ended, Haley fell asleep, we left ½ way through the Transformers Movie and took her back to his parents and to sleep. Phil took me outside to “hang out”….
We stood for hours outside in the yard looking up and watching the many, many falling stars that were all around us overhead. We argued over where Ursa Minor was located and even went so far as to look it up online and then go back out and prove who was right and who was wrong. Turns out, we were both wrong, but I was at least in the right hemisphere, which was more than I could say for him!
Then as the night wore in, I got cold and he held me to keep me warm, which turned into kissing…and I got to tell you, he kind of surprised me, because for me, spark comes from personality, spark comes from conversation…..and with him, eh, not so much in the “spark” department, however kissing him…was very hot all the sudden. I have no idea if it was the stars, or the nicotine I maybe absorbed from his breath, but I was like….hey, this is fun!
Next thing you know he’s pulling me into the house to…well I don’t know what to do, but I was like “no, no, no…your parents are in there….Your DAUGHTER is in there!” And he tugged on me nonetheless.
He nearly made drag marks in the stones with my implanted feet as he pulled me close and closer to the house. Finally at the font door, I gave in and began to follow him, but like the klutz that I am, I accidently hit the door bell on my way through and *ding dong* goes the entirely silent house at 3:00 a.m. Well, I may have been a klutz and it may have been an accident, but it was freaking brilliant, next thing you know here comes Phil’s dad down the hall in his bathrobe and slippers! *laughs*…
Finally I got Phil to take me back home. Oh and what a welcome home it was, I found Alex (my roommate) scared to death in the kitchen saying shakily into the darkness where I was entering! Oh, and he was in his underwear! Niiiiiice! I had left Phil on the porch smoking as I unlocked the door and went in to pee, but I was thoroughly impressed with my roommate when I watched him eating on my couch in his underwear at three in the morning while Phil laughed his ass off saying only to me “so that’s the roommate huh? Is he, um, is he in his underwear?” I rolled my eyes and said, “yeah….*nodding in disgust and mortification* “yep, that’s him!”
The night wound down, and ended….and the date was over. But I found myself thinking that I wouldn’t be seeing Phil again. Between the smoking, the lack of real sparky conversation….where could we go? Sure the kisses were hot, but that’s not enough, well not for me….
But Phil’s a clever vixen he is, he pulled a total chick move and left his sweatshirt at my house and when I texted him to tell him that he had, he said “well, I’ll have to get it the next time I see you”….so I guess that answers that, I WILL see Phil again.
To be continued……….
